The Transformative Power of Sisterhood

A woman, heavy with grief after her father's passing, found herself in Puerto Rico, the sea breeze carrying a whisper of transformation. As she stood on the shores of the island surrounded by life’s beauty  her spirit struggled under the heaviness of it all. Alcohol became her way to hide her pain which  screamed at her with a wound that would not heal. But this comfort that came in the form of  a mirage led her into a cycle of loneliness and despair leaving her drifting in the ocean with no  way to get to dry land.

What I didn’t realize was that healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in connection. Joining Reina gave me a supportive community I didn’t even know I needed. The women in this group welcomed me with open hearts and shared their own struggles and victories. In their stories, I found strength, and in their encouragement, I found hope.Through Reina, I’ve learned to face my pain and addiction without shame. I’ve discovered that setbacks are not failures—they are part of a process of growth and healing. This group has taught me that healing takes time, but it’s possible when you have a safe space and people who truly care.

Then, a hand reached out. A friend, seeing her struggle, gently suggested she look into REINA, a new program—a 12-month pilot project within the CTCM Women's Leadership Development initiative. REINA, her friend explained, was about sisterhood, finding your purpose, and making a real difference. It was about empowering women of color, women like her, to connect with each other, discover their own strength, and become agents of positive change. The core idea was inspiring: a future where women of color not only survive, but thrive as confident leaders, shaping their communities.

Having nothing to  lose, she crossed the threshold into this new world without knowing what lay ahead.  She felt the  unexpected warmth of the REINA community the moment she joined it. These women, with their different  pasts and their common experience of strength, became the sign of hope. Within a safe space, founded  on the 5Cs: Connect, Conceive, Care, Commit, and Carry, she could  participate fully and fearlessly.

Although, she was uncertain about how to open up and share her pain, but  as she listened to the stories of other women, she started to feel the heavy isolation that had been  weighing her down for so long begin to lift.  The "Connect" part of REINA was a revelation. She found herself laughing, crying, sharing meals, and simply being present with women who quickly became like family. The isolation that had been suffocating her began to lift, replaced by a sense of belonging she hadn't realized she was missing. Through thoughtful discussions and workshops, she began to "Conceive" a new image of herself. She started to see her value, not defined by her loss or her struggles, but by her inner strength and her ability to persevere.

REINA also taught her the importance of "Care" – not just for others, but for herself. She learned to offer herself the same kindness and understanding she so readily gave to her new sisters. The shame that had fueled her drinking began to lessen, replaced by a growing sense of self-acceptance. The "Commit" phase challenged her to set goals, to imagine a future beyond her pain. She started to reconnect with passions she'd abandoned in her grief, rediscovering parts of herself she thought she'd lost forever.

The most profound transformation came with the "Carry" phase. She realized that her experiences, her struggles, her journey towards healing, weren't just for her. They were a gift, a source of empathy and deep understanding she could use to support others. She found a new calling: to walk alongside other women on their own paths to healing and empowerment.

This woman’s story is a powerful example of the strength of sisterhood and the life-changing impact of REINA. The program didn't simply help her heal; it empowered her to find her voice, embrace her purpose, and become a true champion of change in her community. The whisper of change she felt when she arrived in Puerto Rico had become a powerful roar of resilience within her own heart.
